La storia di Alessandro il Grande termina con il più tormentato dei capitoli: la lista delle opere che interessarono il Macedone. Difatti, benché le vicende appaiano nelle loro linee guida piuttosto coerenti sugli avvenimenti, i particolari, che vadano dall’aspetto fisico del Macedone fino al suo animo, al suo spirito e ai particolari delle vicende, rimangono non solo nella penombra ma spesso trovano elementi contrastanti da fonte a fonte.

La causa di ciò , è stata attribuita dagli studiosi, all’assenza totale di fonti dirette sul Re e sulle sue vicende, essendo queste giunte a noi solo tramite una serie di epitomi o riassunti delle opere contemporanee agli eventi ed oggi interamente perdute.

 

Tuttavia gli storici, filosofi o subalterni al seguito della spedizione e che raccontarono in presa diretta gli eventi, furono diversi: Callistene, Tolomeo, Cristobulo, Nearco, Clitraco, Efippo, Onesicrito e solo alcune di questi resoconti vennero pubblicati ad Alessandria dopo la morte del loro Signore:

a) La "Storia delle campagne di Alessandro", in 12 volumi redatta dal filosofo Clitarco tra il 320-300 a.C.;
b) Le "Memorie" di Tolomeo Sotere, Re d'Egitto, che sono la fonte principale per "l'Anabasi "(o Ascesa - verso l'Asia superiore) di Arriano di Nicomedia (ca. 150 d.C.);
c) Il "Romanzo d'Alessandro" erroneamente attribuito a Callistene di Olinto, storiografo della spedizione d'Asia, condannato a morte nel 327 a.C.

Da queste tre opere principali presero spunto gli storici antichi posteriori che ci hanno fornito un buon resoconto sulla storia di Alessandro e che si possono identificare nei maggiori quattro che scrissero sulla spedizione macedone:

1) Nella sua Anabasi di Alessandro, ispirato ala struttura senofontiana dal titolo e dalla divisione in 7 libri, Arriano riporta storicamente il resoconto sulla spedizione, dai preparativi alla morte.

Il resoconto della marcia si basa, oltre che sulle Efemeridi (diari di corte) sulle opere di Tolomeo I (367-283 a.C.) ed Aristobulo (374-290 a.C. ca.), compagni del re nella sua spedizione.

2) Decisamente più romanzata, e tratta dall’opera del greco Clitarco (III sec. a.C.), l’ "Historiae Alexandri Magni Macedoniae", è la biografia scritta in dieci libri, di cui i primi due perduti, da Q. Curzio Rufo, con toni non sempre favorevoli sul Conquistatore. Nello scritto appaiono spesso le descrizioni dei thaumasia, le cose strane e misteriose incontrate da Alessandro nella sua spedizione.

A queste due opere principali si aggiunge il non meno importante confronto operato da Plutarco nelle sue Vite Parallele, tra Cesare ed Alessandro a cui bisogna aggiungere tutti quegli storici posteriori  che si occuparono o integrarono le loro opere con brani alessandrini e i cui nomi sono citati da Polibio (II sec a.C.), da Stradone e dall'oratore Luciano di Samosata (II sec.d.C.).

A queste opere si devono aggiungere tutta una serie di frammenti di Nearco di Onesicrito, comandante della flotta macedone, di Eratostene con cui si integrano i racconti della "Vulgata" (5 testi) che consentono di intravedere brani dell'opera di Clitarco sovracitata.
